Do you ever wonder about the mysterious workings of your mind? While you might be aware of your conscious thoughts, there’s a whole other realm of thinking happening beneath the surface – your subconscious mind.

“The conscious mind may be compared to a fountain playing in the sun and falling back into the great subterranean pool of subconscious from which it rises.” – Sigmund Freud

Here are seven fascinating facts about your subconscious that might just blow your mind:

Your Subconscious Controls Most of Your Behaviour

When we talk about the subconscious mind controlling most of our behaviour, it means that many of the things we do, decisions we make, and emotions we feel are not entirely under our conscious control. Instead, they are influenced by processes happening beneath the surface of our awareness. Research suggests that as much as 95% of what we do every day is determined by our subconscious mind. This includes both simple actions like brushing our teeth and more complex behaviours like driving a car.

Think about it this way: When you first learned to drive, you probably had to consciously think about every little step – checking your mirrors, signalling, pressing the pedals, etc. But over time, as you gained experience, these actions became automatic. You don’t have to consciously think about each step anymore; your subconscious mind takes over, allowing you to focus on other things while driving. This automaticity is the result of subconscious programming.

Similarly, many of our habits are formed and reinforced by our subconscious mind. Whether it’s reaching for a snack when we’re stressed or procrastinating on a task, these behaviours often stem from deeply ingrained patterns stored in our subconscious. Understanding this aspect of our minds can help us become more aware of our habits and make positive changes where necessary.

It’s a Powerful Problem Solver

Have you ever experienced a moment when the solution to a problem suddenly pops into your head seemingly out of nowhere? That’s your subconscious mind at work. While our conscious mind is limited in its ability to process information – it can only focus on a few things at a time – our subconscious is like a supercomputer running in the background, tirelessly analysing data and searching for solutions.

Studies have shown that our subconscious mind continues to work on a problem even when we’re not actively thinking about it. So, when you take a break from trying to solve a difficult puzzle or make a tough decision, your subconscious keeps churning away, often coming up with creative solutions when you least expect it.

This is why many people find that they have breakthrough moments or sudden insights when they’re doing something unrelated to the problem at hand, like taking a shower or going for a walk. By giving our subconscious the time and space it needs to work its magic, we can tap into its problem-solving capabilities more effectively.

Memories Are Stored in Your Subconscious

Our memories are not neatly organized files that we can access at will; instead, they are stored in various parts of our brain, including the subconscious. While we might not always be able to recall a particular memory consciously, it still influences our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

Think about a time when you caught a whiff of a familiar scent and suddenly found yourself transported back to a specific moment from your past. That’s because certain smells, sounds, or sights can trigger memories stored deep within our subconscious mind, leading to unexpected emotional responses or vivid recollections of past events.

These subconscious memories can shape our perceptions of the world and ourselves, often without us even realizing it. They can influence our likes and dislikes, our fears and desires, and even our sense of identity. By becoming more aware of the role that memories play in our subconscious mind, we can gain a better understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

Highly Suggestible Nature of the Subconscious Mind

Our subconscious mind operates in a manner that makes it particularly susceptible to influence from external sources, such as advertisements. This susceptibility arises from its highly suggestible nature. Unlike our conscious mind, which critically evaluates information before accepting or rejecting it, our subconscious tends to absorb information more readily, often without our conscious awareness.

Advertisers leverage this suggestibility by employing techniques such as repetition and subtle messaging to bypass our conscious defenses and implant ideas directly into our subconscious. When we repeatedly encounter certain messages or images, they become ingrained in our subconscious, influencing our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

As a result, advertising can shape our purchasing decisions, preferences, and even our self-perception without us realizing it. For example, a catchy jingle or a visually appealing advertisement may create positive associations with a product, leading us to perceive it more favourably and increasing the likelihood of us purchasing it.

It’s crucial to be mindful of the media we consume and the messages we expose ourselves to, as they have the power to shape our beliefs and behaviours in significant ways. By becoming more aware of how advertising and other forms of media influence our subconscious, we can take steps to protect ourselves from manipulation and make more informed choices.

Dreams as Insights Into the Subconscious

Dreams provide a unique window into the workings of our subconscious mind. While we sleep, our subconscious is free to express itself without the constraints imposed by our conscious awareness. As a result, dreams often reflect our deepest fears, desires, and unresolved issues, offering valuable insights into our inner workings.

Have you ever experienced a dream that felt so vivid and real, yet upon waking, you couldn’t quite grasp its meaning? This phenomenon highlights the mysterious nature of dreams and their connection to the subconscious.

By paying attention to recurring themes or symbols in our dreams, we can gain a better understanding of our subconscious thoughts and emotions. For example, recurring dreams about falling may indicate feelings of insecurity or a lack of control in waking life, while dreams about flying may symbolize a desire for freedom or escape.

Analysing our dreams can provide valuable insights into areas of our lives that may require attention or resolution. By exploring the symbolism and emotions present in our dreams, we can uncover hidden truths about ourselves and gain clarity on our thoughts and feelings.

Understanding the Subconscious Mind’s Response to Negatives

Your subconscious mind processes information differently from your conscious mind, particularly when it comes to negative statements. Unlike your conscious mind, which can understand and process negations such as “don’t” or “can’t,” your subconscious tends to focus on the words and concepts presented to it, rather than the intention behind them.

For example, if you tell yourself, “I don’t want to fail,” your subconscious mind may still focus on the word “fail,” reinforcing the idea of failure rather than the intention to avoid it. This can inadvertently reinforce negative beliefs and behaviours, making it harder to achieve your goals.

Positive affirmations, on the other hand, are often more effective in aligning your subconscious with your goals and desires. By framing your thoughts positively, such as saying “I am calm and confident” instead of “I don’t want to be anxious,” you can direct your subconscious towards more constructive patterns of thinking and behaviour.

Understanding this aspect of the subconscious mind can empower you to use positive affirmations and visualization techniques to reprogram your subconscious beliefs and overcome obstacles more effectively. By consciously choosing to focus on positive thoughts and intentions, you can harness the power of your subconscious to create the life you desire.

The Subconscious Mind: Always On

While we may think of our conscious mind as the primary driver of our thoughts and actions, it’s essential to recognize the critical role that our subconscious mind plays in regulating essential functions and processing information from our environment.

Unlike our conscious mind, which can only focus on one thing at a time and requires periods of rest, our subconscious mind is constantly active, even when we’re asleep. It oversees vital functions like breathing, digestion, and circulation without us having to think about them consciously. Additionally, it stores vast amounts of information accumulated over our lifetimes and processes stimuli from our environment, helping us navigate the world around us effortlessly.

For example, think about the last time you rode a bike or drove a car. Chances are, you didn’t have to consciously think about every movement or decision involved; much of it was guided by your subconscious programming and muscle memory. Similarly, when you encounter familiar situations or stimuli, your subconscious mind draws on past experiences and knowledge to inform your actions and responses.

Overall, understanding the power and influence of your subconscious mind can lead to profound personal growth and self-discovery. By becoming more aware of its workings and learning to harness its potential, you can unlock hidden talents, overcome obstacles, and achieve your goals with greater ease. So, the next time you find yourself pondering the mysteries of the mind, remember that the most profound insights often lie just beneath the surface, in the vast depths of your subconscious.
