Goals, Vision, Mission, Mindsets, Attitude, Beliefs, Commitment, Willingness, Perception, Values, Money, Higher Education…and many other such words. Do you think of any connection among these attributes in the life of successful people?
Oxford definition of these terminologies are like-
Vision: “the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom.”
Mission: “a strongly felt aim, ambition, or calling.”
Goal: “the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.”
Attitude: “a settled way of thinking or feeling about something.”
Belief: “an acceptance that something exists or is true, especially one without proof.”
Value: “principles or standards of behavior; one’s judgment of what is important in life.”
Commitment: “the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc.”
Willingness: “the quality or state of being prepared to do something; readiness.”
Perception: “the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses.”
Mindset: “the established set of attitudes held by someone.”
Are these attributes not interconnected to each other? One is leading to the other. What is the common purpose behind them? If we look positively, all these words are associated with success. People sets goal for what? The organization has a vision and mission for what? A positive attitude is for what? All this is for growth & success.
It’s not that you need to follow all the above words to achieve success. But you only set perception for yourself, like you have a good attitude but not a goal or like you are having goal but a fixed mindset person, so lacking growth.
“Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” – Confucius
Attributes are Interlinked
Have you seen a person around, who is very good at goal setting and achieving those goals but his or her attitude is just so-so (not always positive)? Yet he or she has achieved success in life. Or one person who is having a growth mindset but lacking objectives or goals. Each one is true that at the time of success, many of these people are not having all these attributes on the top scale. But during the process or journey towards success or even after the success they develop their lacking attributes. Or sometimes they need not!
So don’t assess yourself on each attribute. If you are good or better on any one or two, then you can start your journey towards success. There is a very good possibility that you will learn other essential attributes during the process as these are interconnected.
If you are committed, you will naturally have a growth-oriented mindset as you cannot continue that with a fixed mindset. If you are having a positive attitude then you must have high values in life.
But the point is which one is essential to start with! Again you can start with anyone, but each attribute is having a different lead-time to success. With the correct one, you can reduce your lead time drastically.
Essential and Non-Essential (Catalyst) Attributes
Is it essential to have a positive attitude or growth mindset to achieve success? The answer is Yes or No. My answer is no. I have seen many positive attitude people, but they are lacking success. Even while discussing with some of them, they are having the willingness to grow, so I can say that they are having a growth mindset also, but still lacking success in life.
There is no doubt that if you are on the path to success, then a positive attitude and growth mindset will give you a competitive advantage or a booster. Because for long-term success, society expects these attributes in you.
Essential Attributes to Success
These attributes are essential for success-
- Goals or Targets for life
- Willingness to achieve them
- Commitment or Persistence to continue the journey
- Target date or timeline to judge the progress
You may add a few if feel so. But without a goal in mind, you are just scattering your energy. Once you have goals in your mind, then your both minds (conscious and subconscious) work towards achieving these goals. Your thoughts become clear, and your actions automatically aligned towards goals. Once you are clear on what you want in your life, approximately 30 trillion body cells and 86 billion neurons of your brain start acting to support you. (Just to grasp the figures, the latest estimates for the number of stars in the Milky Way is somewhere between 200 and 400 billion. One trillion is equivalent to 1000 billion)
Having goals is essential but only having goals does not guarantee success. Without action and target date, each goal is just a wish. Our willingness to achieve them through persistent actions is the key to success. Each action may or may not give you the desired result but continuity will sure!
Non-Essential (Catalyst) Attributes
These attributes are non-essential but can act as catalysts or process enhancers for success-
- Positive attitude
- Growth Mindset
- High Values
- Beliefs
- Money
- Higher Education etc.
All these are attributes are very important. Even without some of them, you cannot achieve long-term success in life. These are process enhancers. Like with higher education, you can have a very good career start i.e. good financial support. In general, the higher the education, the higher the income. With the investment of 3-4 years in higher education, you can save several years of your lifetime in the process of achieving success.
Even with money, you can catapult your success rate. Many rich people are not even willing to take risks as they have fear losing their money. And at the same time so many, not so financially established, taking risks to make their life successful. They are establishing businesses to provide jobs to mass and contributing to society.

Results of Commitment
From here you can take one clue that, why so many positive attitudes people could not achieve success. Though they are good but lacking the willingness or commitment to achieve those targets.
Those who are committed do not necessarily have the rest of the attributes but one thing is for sure: willingness & commitment to do something. It was a commitment of Dhirubhai Ambani to start RIL and so did for Steve Jobs to start Apple. RIL’s market cap had crossed $ 200 billion in Sep 2020. And the market cap of Apple is a whopping $ 2449 billion (as of Aug 2021).
Starlink, operated by SpaceX is providing satellite internet service. Their commitment is extraordinary, to provide internet coverage on the entire earth, including remote places. With this commitment, they have launched thousands of satellites in space (Low Earth Orbit). Personally, I do not doubt this company’s success. As of August 2021, the beta service offering is available in 12 countries.
