In today’s busy world, we often find ourselves trapped in Either-Or thinking. This means we think we have to choose between two options, like work or family, success or happiness. This way of thinking can limit us, make us feel stressed, and keep us from seeing all the possibilities in life. But what if there was a way to break free from this and embrace a Both mindset, where we can have both options instead of just one? The key lies in using the power of our subconscious mind. By tapping into this deeper part of our mind, we can learn to think more openly and creatively, allowing us to achieve more and live a more balanced and fulfilling life.

“The mind is everything. What you think, you become.” – Buddha

Understanding Either-Or Thinking

Either-Or thinking is a natural way our conscious mind tries to simplify the world. When faced with decisions, our brains often look for clear, simple choices to make the process easier. This might have been useful in the past when quick decisions could mean the difference between survival and danger. However, in today’s complex world, this type of thinking can be very limiting. It forces us to see things in black and white, making us believe that we can only choose one path and must give up the other.

For example, you might think, “I can either focus on my career or spend time with my family,” or “I can either be financially successful or do something I love.” These kinds of choices can make us feel stuck and unhappy, as we feel we must sacrifice one important thing for another.

The Power of the Subconscious Mind

The subconscious mind is a powerful part of our brain that works behind the scenes. It stores all our memories, experiences, and feelings, and it influences how we think and act without us even realizing it. Unlike the conscious mind, which thinks logically and linearly, the subconscious mind is more flexible and creative. It doesn’t see things in black and white; instead, it looks for patterns and connections, which makes it a valuable tool for breaking free from Either-Or thinking.

Reprogramming the Subconscious Mind

To shift from Either-Or thinking to Both thinking, we need to reprogram our subconscious mind. This might sound complicated, but it can be done with some simple steps:

  • Self-Awareness and Reflection: The first step is to become aware of how we currently think. This means paying attention to times when we feel like we have to choose between two options and asking ourselves why we think that way. Understanding when and why we fall into Either-Or thinking can help us start to change it.
  • Affirmations and Positive Self-Talk: Affirmations are positive statements that we repeat to ourselves to help change our thinking. For example, instead of saying, “I have to choose between my career and my family,” we can say, “I can have a successful career and spend quality time with my family.” Repeating these positive statements helps our subconscious mind start to believe them and adopt a Both mindset.
  • Visualization: Visualization is a technique where we imagine ourselves achieving our goals and living the life we want. By picturing scenarios where we successfully combine different aspects of our lives, we can train our subconscious mind to see this as possible and normal. The more vividly we visualize these situations, the more our subconscious mind will accept them.
  • Meditation and Mindfulness: Meditation and mindfulness practices help us quiet our conscious mind and connect with our subconscious. By meditating regularly, we can reduce stress and become more in tune with our inner thoughts and feelings. Mindfulness helps us stay present in the moment and open to new possibilities, making it easier to move away from Either-Or thinking.

Embracing the Both Mentality

After reprogramming our subconscious mind, we need to practice the Both mentality in our daily lives. This means changing our perspective and being open to new ways of thinking and solving problems.

  • Challenge Binary Choices: When we face a situation that seems to require a choice between two options, we should challenge it. Instead of accepting that we have to choose, we can ask ourselves, “Is there a way to have both?” or “Can I find a solution that includes the benefits of both options?” By questioning these binary choices, we open ourselves up to more creative solutions.
  • Look for Synergies: We should look for ways that different parts of our lives can work together. For example, if we’re trying to balance work and personal interests, we can find ways to integrate them. This might mean pursuing a hobby that complements our career or finding a job that aligns with our personal values. By looking for synergies, we can create a more balanced and fulfilling life.
  • Be Flexible: Flexibility is key to maintaining a Both mentality. Life is constantly changing, and rigid thinking can make it hard to adapt. By staying flexible, we can adjust our plans and find new ways to combine different aspects of our lives as circumstances change.
  • Surround Yourself with Support: It’s important to surround ourselves with people who support our Both mentality. This could be friends, family, mentors, or communities that value holistic and creative thinking. Being around like-minded people can reinforce our new mindset and provide inspiration and encouragement.

The Benefits of Both Thinking

Switching from Either-Or to Both thinking can have many positive effects on our lives:

  • Enhanced Creativity: By embracing Both thinking, we open ourselves up to more creative solutions. Instead of being limited to one option, we can explore multiple possibilities and come up with innovative ideas.
  • Reduced Stress: Either-Or thinking often leads to stress because it makes us feel like we have to make tough choices and sacrifices. Both thinking reduces this stress by allowing us to find balance and harmony in our lives.
  • Increased Fulfilment: When we adopt a Both mentality, we can pursue multiple passions and interests without feeling restricted. This leads to a more fulfilling life, where we can enjoy different aspects of who we are.
  • Better Decision-Making: Both thinking improves our decision-making skills by expanding our options. Instead of being stuck between two choices, we can consider a wider range of possibilities and make more informed decisions.

Putting Both Thinking into Practice

Now that we understand the importance of Both thinking and how to reprogram our subconscious mind, it’s time to put this into practice in our daily lives. Here are some practical steps to help us embrace Both thinking:

  • Identify Areas of Either-Or Thinking: Start by identifying areas in your life where you tend to think in Either-Or terms. This could be in your career, relationships, personal goals, or any other aspect of your life. Write down these situations and reflect on why you feel you have to choose between two options.
  • Reframe Your Thinking: Once you’ve identified these areas, reframe your thinking to incorporate Both thinking. Use affirmations and positive self-talk to reinforce the idea that you can have both options. For example, if you feel like you have to choose between working hard and taking care of your health, reframe your thinking to, “I can work hard and take care of my health.”
  • Create a Vision Board: A vision board is a visual representation of your goals and dreams. Create a vision board that includes images and words representing the different aspects of your life that you want to combine. Place it somewhere you’ll see it regularly to remind yourself of your Both mindset.
  • Practice Gratitude: Practicing gratitude helps shift our focus from what we lack to what we have. By regularly acknowledging and appreciating the different aspects of our lives, we reinforce the idea that we can have both. Keep a gratitude journal and write down things you’re grateful for each day.
  • Set Clear Intentions: Set clear intentions for how you want to incorporate Both thinking into your life. Be specific about what you want to achieve and how you plan to do it. For example, if you want to balance your career and family life, set an intention to spend quality time with your family while also advancing in your career.
  • Seek Support and Accountability: Find a support system that encourages your Both mindset. Share your goals and intentions with friends, family, or a mentor who can provide support and hold you accountable. Join communities or groups that promote holistic and balanced living.

Overcoming Challenges

As you work on shifting to Both thinking, you may encounter challenges. Here are some common challenges and how to overcome them:

  • Fear of Failure: The fear of failing at balancing multiple aspects of life can be a major obstacle. Remind yourself that failure is a part of the learning process. Embrace it as an opportunity to grow and adjust your approach.
  • Societal Pressure: Society often promotes Either-Or thinking, making it challenging to adopt a Both mindset. Stay true to your intentions and surround yourself with supportive people who understand and value your approach.
  • Self-Doubt: It’s natural to doubt whether you can successfully combine different aspects of your life. Use affirmations, visualization, and positive self-talk to build your confidence and reinforce your belief in your ability to achieve a balanced life.
  • Time Management: Balancing multiple aspects of life requires effective time management. Prioritize your tasks and create a schedule that allows you to allocate time to each area. Be flexible and adjust your schedule as needed.

Conclusion

Breaking free from Either-Or thinking and embracing Both thinking is a transformative journey that can lead to a more fulfilling and balanced life. By tapping into the power of the subconscious mind and reprogramming our thought patterns, we can open ourselves to new possibilities and creative solutions. This shift requires self-awareness, positive affirmations, visualization, and mindfulness practices. As we practice Both thinking in our daily lives, we will experience enhanced creativity, reduced stress, increased fulfilment, and better decision-making. Remember, it’s not about choosing one path over another; it’s about finding ways to integrate and harmonize different aspects of our lives. Embrace the Both mentality and unlock your true potential. You have the power to create a life that encompasses all your passions, interests, and goals. Take the first step today and start living a more expansive and fulfilling life.

Most people live their entire lives without truly understanding how their minds work or the immense power they hold within. Fewer than two percent of people can confidently answer questions like: What drives my thoughts? Why do I feel resistance to my own goals? You’ve likely experienced moments when you wanted to take a bold step—perhaps starting a new business or making a life-changing decision—only to hear an inner voice warning you of failure. That voice often justifies its fears by recalling countless stories of others’ setbacks—family members, friends, society, even distant headlines. It’s as if your mind maintains a detailed archive of every failure around you, replaying them to keep you from moving forward. But what if this inner voice could be understood, reprogrammed, and even turned into your greatest ally? Imagine what would be possible if both your conscious intentions and subconscious patterns worked together instead of pulling in opposite directions. This collection, Mindful Shots, brings together some of the most insightful writings on mindfulness from Fastlane Freedom. Each piece explores practical and scientific perspectives on how the mind shapes our choices, influences our health, and even participates in physical healing. Through research-backed insights and timeless wisdom, this book will help you see that the mind isn’t just a passive observer—it’s an active force capable of changing your reality. By learning how to quiet the noise, shift your mental inputs, and harness your inner voice, you’ll gain a clearer path to personal growth, emotional balance, and a deeper understanding of what mindful living truly means.
